Wow — I have a lot to say about my concerns and expectations: I have been in severe back pain and felt that I needed to see a surgeon in urgently — and NEOS accommodated me almost immediately (which was a GREAT surprise, frankly, from my experience as a retired nurse in a huge medical center); Dr. Cowan was wonderful. He listened carefully, considered my many concerns (in addition to the back pain) with compassion and extraordinary patience, explained treatments and procedures (that were new to me) carefully, addressed all options, and helped me come up with a logical, conservative step-by-step action plan of medical intervention to address the pain. I entered the appointment with fear and trepidation, but left having been put at ease by his warm and sympathetic manner, his treating me and my concerns as important and valid, and by his overall professionalism. In 1996 I was 13 and involved in a boating accident. I broke T3-T4 and had many other injuries. I was also paralyzed from the chest down and given a 1 in 600,000 chance of walking again. 10 days after Dr.Cowan performed my surgery, I started getting feeling back. After being transferred to Shriners Hospital, I was slowly able to relearn how to walk. Since then I've had 23 more back surgeries and Dr.Cowan is still my Knight in Shining Armor. He listens to me very well and explains every option possible to help my situation. I can't put into words how wonderful and intritgual he is, in my ability to have a semi normal life. I lived most of my life with back pain, and eventually pain running down the leg. Dr. Cowan replace the disc, infused three. I am now without pain. He did an awesome job. Dr. Cowan performed two surgeries on my back. The first eliminated the chronic pain I suffered with for years in my left leg, and which five deferent doctors told me was inoperable. Great doctor and surgeon. He listened to my concerns and any questions before and after surgery. He would ask what I thought about things and told me if he agreed or disagree but most of the time we agreed about I needed. When I was in the hospital he checked on me or had his PAs check on me. He agreed with what kind of rehab I needed and made sure I was happy with acute rehab I was at. Dr Cowan has the best bedside manner I've seen in a long time! He took the time to explain what the surgery was going to entail! Dr Cowan explained what he would be doing, then lenghth of time of surgery, time in the recovery room and that I would be spending the night. I had a consultation with Dr Cowan regarding my lower back and the possibility of surgery. Dr Cowan was very professional and very pleasant. He reviewed the MRI and explained the situation very well. He examined me and checked out my walking and range of motion. He explained that surgery was not an option. My back was very arthritic. I asked him if artificial disk replacement would help.
